Summertime is Funtimes.

Seriously.  Graduation weekend is a busy-ass weekend with an unfortunate amount of out-of-town drivers trying to navigate alien one-way streets, college graduates partying their butts off for one last hurrah, and undergrads partying one last time for this school year before they leave for the Summer.  The service industry is running around like a chicken with it’s head cut off trying to keep up with the craziness.

Then everyone leaves and the locals get a breather.  They rest up for a couple days, then they start emerging from their trauma stupors and have some fun.  The college kids that stick around for summer school start loving Madison for it’s great summertime weather and joyous activity (yay it’s not Winter types of activity:  softball, kickball, ultimate frisbee leagues and LOADS of bikers and runners).  The city is way less crazy-busy, and a little more crazy-crazy. Eating like a cab driver | Food & Drink Feature | Chicago Reader

Eating like a cab driver | Food & Drink Feature | Chicago Reader.

It sucks when you work late in a small enough city that all the health(ier) choices have closed by 10pm.  A few of our drivers take the time to stop by their house and decompress for an hour, have dinner, and prepare themselves for bartime.  I sometimes stop by a nice deli or grocery store earlier in the day and have a sandwich and fruit waiting for me when I get hungry.

My work bag always has a KIND bar in it, sometimes an Uberbar, I’ll bring a banana or tangerine (pre-peeled) from home, and I will try to stop myself from stopping at Greenbush Bakery for a donut… but that has a 50% success rate.  Greenbush is open until about 2am every Friday and Saturday night, and on top of that they’re the best donuts I’ve ever had.

I’m with Tunde (from the above article), though.  I dig Chipotle’s burrito bowls.

This Trendy “Strong is the New Skinny” Thing (and what it could mean for the next generation of girls)

Love. Love love love. Not about cabs, but still very important.

“I’ll need a receipt for this.”

This past weekend EVERYONE was in a GREAT mood.  It was the first really nice Spring weekend this year.  The Farmer’s Market was a zoo, Crazylegs happened, the sun was out and everyone was being active.  Despite half the city riding their bikes and skateboards, business was booming.

I’ll start this entry with a shout-out to Trixie, Megalomaniac, and Siren for callin’ me during a dip in business to give me a sweet little ride with awesome lady passengers.  It’s always a pleasure to have friends in my cab.  ❤

This happened at the airport.  It seems like flights are getting smaller and smaller every day.

On a more serious note:  I chastised someone about something they said to me last night. Continue reading

Broom Street

It’s been pretty cold in Madison and people are getting a little upset that Spring hasn’t sprung.  I think it might be affecting people’s moods and interactions.

Downtown, in the middle of a student apartment neighborhood, some students decided it’d be a good idea to open a full recycling bin and start throwing the glass bottles into the street.  They decided on a one-way main artery of traffic during bar-time.

The police in Madison are very alert.  Every other weekend I see someone pulled over going the wrong way down University.  It only takes a few seconds to correct yourself when you do something like this, but the Madison Police are always watching and catch drunk drivers more often than not.

Anyway, the Madison Police drive up and catch the idiots smashing glass into the street.  They nab two dudes and make a deal:  No jail if you sweep up your mess.  Several of our drivers came across the scene of two embarassed bros sweeping up loads of broken glass with brooms on Broom Street, and then laughed about it all night after we checked in.  “Brooms on Broom Street!  HAH!”

I imagine the students forced to clean were from the East or West Coast and they never imagined that if they were caught there might be consequences beyond a fine.
